The tourism in the var

Gorges du Verdon

The Gorges du Verdon is considered to be one of Europe’s most beautiful river canyons. It is about 25 KM long and up to 700 meters deep. It was formed by the Verdon River, which is named after its startling turquoise-green color, one of the canyon’s most distinguishing characteristics. Because of its proximity to the French Riviera, the canyon is very popular with tourists, who can drive around its rim, rent kayaks or hike. The limestone walls, which are several hundreds of metres high, attract many rock climbers. It is considered an outstanding destination for multi-pitch climbing. There are routes encompassing cracks, pillars and seemingly endless walls. The climbing is generally of a technical nature, and there are over 1,500 routes, ranging from 20m to over 400m.The most impressive part lies between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-sainte-marie, where the river has cut a ravine up to 700 meters down through the limestone mass. At the end of the canyon, the Verdon river flows into the artificial lake of Sainte-croix-du-verdon the brightest, bluest lake you have ever seen. Once by the lake you can swim, rent a pedalo, canoe, sail or sit back and enjoy the view. Just the drive to the gorges is amassing.

Les Callanques de Cassis

Les îles d’or

The 3 together are known as Iles d’Or (the Golden Islands), because of the sun’s metallic reflection on their cliffs. Only later on did they take on the name of Iles d’Hyères due to their close proximity with the city of the same name. Set off the coast of Hyères-les-Palmiers, the Iles d’Or are the jewel of this section of the coast. Packed with reminders of their tumultuous history, they also offer delightful year-round excursions:

– Porquerolles, the largest of the three Golden Islands, home to beautiful sandy beaches to be explored on foot or by bike.
– Port-Cros, a National Park, boasting an immensely rich and well-preserved underwater plant and animal life.
– Le Levant, a naturists’ paradise…
The Legend of the Islands. According to Hyères-born writer Gustave Roux, Prince Olbianus was the proud father of 4 sisters of astonishing beauty (Olbia was the name of the Greek trading post at the origin of the town of Hyères). One day, as the sisters were bathing off the coast, pirate ships appeared on the horizon. Prince Olbianus, aware of the imminent danger, begged his daughters to return to the shore, but the unlucky girls has swum out too far. Their despairing father knelt down on the beach and prayed the gods to save his treasures. Suddenly, the 4 daughters felt their arms and legs become stiff and paralyzed. 3 of the girls were transformed into islands and the fourth, who was nearer the shore, changed into the delicious Presqu’île de Giens (Giens Peninsula) as she held out her imploring arms to her father.

Getting to the Islands; boats operated by from Hyères to the three islands all year round You will have to leave you car on the mainland when you visit the islands, as they are the exclusive domain of pedestrians and cyclists.
