The Heart
of Provence, The Var.
The Var is unknown as a name, but it is the true centre of Provence,
here you will experience to
wealth
and unspoilt treasures of this area. Its beautiful landscape with
both mountains and sea and the rolling hills in between covered with
vine yards, pine forest, olive groves and lavender fields. There are
sandy beaches, safe for the children to play, rocky coves and the
dramatic coast line of the Estérel mountain range falling into
the Mediterranean Sea.
Drive
inland to the sleepy picturesque Provencal hilltop villages with their
cafes, bars, restaurants, winding streets and pretty village squares.
Feel the warmth of the sun as it ripens the grapes on the vines growing
on the hills and in the valley's, stop, take time to visit the wine
domains and sample their local wines, this area produces light fresh
rosés which represent 75 % of the harvest, the reds make up
20 % and the whites only 5 %. The harvest or as it is know "vendages"
is normally within the month of September, this is another wonderful
time to visit this area, see how the wine begins life. Each village
and town has great choices of Domains and Wine Co-Op, so you will
never run dry.
If
you wish to soak up the sun with the sound of the sea rushing along
the beach edge you can pick from sandy beaches or rocky coves, just
dip your toes or take a boat trip along the coast or out to one of
the Iles d'Hyères a tourist's dream. A drive along the Estérel
coast is well worth the effort the scenery is breath taking.
If you
are feeling adventuress, the Var can offer you its very own Grand
Canyon of Europe, the Gorges de Verdon which forms a natural frontier
between the Var and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Here the air is clear,
the breeze is gentle and the mountains forming the gorge are over
whelming, follow the river down to the brightest, bluest lake you
have ever seen, Lac St. Croix. Once by the lake you can swim, canoe,
sail or sit back and enjoy the view. There are many walks that can
be taken alongside the river through the gorge and the dare-devils
will find sports, such as climbing, abseiling, rafting and hang gliding,
me; I prefer to have my feet on the ground. The Var canoffer those
outdoor enthusiasts, walking, cycling, sailing, canoeing, horse riding
all within there locality.
Talking
about outdoor activities, The South of France boasts a large selection
of golf courses aimed for all levels of golfers, within the area of
our villas and apartments there are 7 to choose from.
There
is a busier side to life in Provence, you can always visit the busy
metropolises such as Nice,Cannes, Toulon and Marseille. Within all
of these busy towns there are still sites to be seen, the old flower
market in Nice is just one thing you can go and see. Talking of things
to see, try St. Tropez, you never know who you may bump into!
To travel
to this part of the world you have 3 airports, Nice, Toulon and Marseille.
The TGV and the car trains stops at Les Arcs-sur-Argens and St. Raphael.
Plus the quickest and most direct route to this
area is by the Autoroute that stretches from the North to the South
of France.
We realize
